An interactive 3D academy for marine safety equipment, in the browser. At Posidonia 2026 a shipowner pulled a davit winch brake apart in real time — explode, measure the wear, find the fault — with every spec traced to an ISO 23678 clause.
OutcomeStopped shipowners at the booth. No competitor’s stand did.
Brief
Class societies own the marine-safety conversation with corporate decks and stock photography. Surveying a lifeboat davit brake is invisible and abstract — yet a wrong reassembly kills. The goal: make the gear touchable, with authority that comes from transparency, not a brochure.
Work
- Real-time 3D in the browser with React-Three-Fiber + Three.js; the brake assembled from 6 CAD-derived GLBs, Draco-compressed
- An explode slider that fans 8 named parts apart, tap-to-isolate with a per-part inspection card
- Four modes: How it works (ghosted drum + live telemetry), Strip-down, Measure (gauge vs wear limit), Find the fault (timed, with a consequence cascade)
- Scroll-driven X-ray modules for a fire extinguisher and SCBA; an enclosed-lifeboat annual-survey walkthrough
- 60 ISO 23678 clauses, verbatim and searchable; every on-screen spec traced to source in a written audit
- An AI mentor (Anthropic Claude) in four modes — watcher / tutor / examiner / coach
- Booth-hardened kiosk: a 22-second idle attract loop, large touch targets, offline (vendored Three.js)
Highlight
The hardest part: authoring a correct, believable mechanism from messy real CAD. Six separately-scanned GLBs, re-nested by hand so all 8 parts stay inside the drum through a full explode — under a strict rule: no invented specs, every number verified.
